For your snowy weekend reading pleasure and encouragement, we present the following poem we received from a high school sophomore. I found it anything but “sophomoric”; one rarely sees a poem with the author’s own research citations, which makes me envision a great future for this young man serving the pro-life movement through writing both as an art and a science.
The pro-life generation: using its talents for good. Thank you, Samuel, for sharing! We hope hearts will be touched through it.
Why I hate ________ by Samuel Daily (Pearland High School)
I would have become a teacher, a coach, a president… but they said, “All it will become is a delinquent”.
I could have raised a family, won the Medal of Honor, drawn a great work of art… but they said, “It will be of more use taken apart”.
I thought “a person is a person no matter how small”*… but apparently anything goes as long as it’s done within medical room walls.
I would have walked across the Grand Canyon, seen Niagara Falls, gone fishing in my favorite bay… but they said, “you’d better act now before it sees the light of day”.
I could have laughed at a funny picture, told a nice joke, or at least made a good pun… but they said, “It will only cost you four hundred and fifty one”*
I thought America was “the land of the free and the home of the brave”…but what it’s really become is a mass grave.
I would have won the hundred meter dash, scored my first touchdown, hit the game-winning half court shot… but they said, “Don’t damage its liver, those are worth a lot”.
I could have made my own comic, read an intriguing book, written a story… but they said, “There’s nothing wrong about it…don’t worry”.
I thought it was “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”… at least that’s what our founding fathers taught, but I’m sure it would shock them to find out that it’s the other way around… because little babies are being unwound.
I would have planted a beautiful flower, been the first man on mars, harnessed the power of the sun… but they said, “It will only take about 5 to 10 minutes*, and then it will all be done”.
I could have gotten my drivers license, bought my first car, taken a pretty date to a dance…but they wouldn’t give me the chance.
I thought I heard them say “every woman should have the right to choose”, that’s all fine… unless it’s your life that you’re about to lose.
The real question is: are “men endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights…” or is it the will of the strong that determines the rights of the weak?
I hate abortion because no matter how you look at it, it’s murder in the first degree, and although many disagree that shouldn’t silence our plea because one day we will all be held to account by God…so who would you rather please?
