The Hartford Courant reports that young Sara Mujica of Danbury is one of four people in Connecticut known to have contracted Zika — and she’s pregnant.

I braced myself for heartbreaking news as I read the article, but was relieved and thrilled to find this beautiful, brave quote instead:

“Mujica, who is Catholic, said she weighed her risks and decided to keep the baby.

“This is my blessing. This is my miracle,” she said. “I have a cousin who has Down syndrome and he is so smart and l love him so much. I would never give up a Down syndrome child or a child with birth defects.”

Bless you, Sara! That is what hope looks like. A significant part of our job is to inspire others, but you have just inspired us. While nobody thinks you were trying to make a political statement, it does fly in the face of great social pressure. This is impressive for such a young woman, but I believe you are already finding a strength you didn’t know you had. Our prayers are with you and your family. God has big plans for you, no doubt. One day not so far from now, you will look on your baby’s face for the first time, and though certainly there could be steep challenges ahead, we are confident you will not regret choosing life.
